A new record of a
pandeid medusa from Eilat
Dr. Bella Galil, Israel Oceanographic
& Limnological Research 2.4.2012
A specimen of Larsonia
pterophylla
(Haeckel, 1879) was photographed by Keren Levy in shallow
waters off Hof Almog, Eilat. This is a widespread species
with most records being from the western tropical Atlantic.
However, it is also known from western Africa and Japan. It
has never been reported from the Red Sea and may have arrived
with ballast waters according to Prof. Peter Schuchert of the
Museum d'histoire naturelle, Geneva, Switzerland. |
